Established in 1976, Deacon & Sandys specialise in the design, manufacture and fitting of traditional English interior joinery and 16th and 17th century style furniture in oak.
Working nationally and internationally our clients include private individuals as well as organisations such as the National Trust and English Heritage.
Each piece of work is the culmination of careful research and refined technique and is faithful to the look, style and construction of the original piece that inspired it. Hand finishing ensures that the perfect level of distressing is achieved and gives colour that displays the subtle tones and innate character of the wood.
All Deacon & Sandys‘ work has the same enduring quality.
Our service is as thorough as our craftsmanship is skilled. We select oak according to the client's preferences - either character grade to create the feel and interest of the genuine article, or straight grained for a clean, more contemporary finish. Our design team will interpret the client's ideas enabling our experienced workforce to create architectural features that have a distinct personal style whilst retaining the characteristics of the chosen period. Client satisfaction can be measured by the fact that so many regularly return to us for additional projects.
Our portfolio of architectural pieces ranges from magnificent oak staircases, intricate balustrading, hand carved overmantels and wall panelling to wide oak boarded floors and traditional style doors. Each piece is made with meticulous attention to period detail and tailored to meet the client's exact specification.
We can produce panelling in plain, geometric and 'linenfold' styles, using similar methods to those employed by medieval craftsmen. Random width oak floorboards are chosen for their interesting grain, knots and character and then distressed by hand, bringing natural warmth to any room. Our oak window frames and interior and exterior doors are becoming increasingly popular for both newly built, high quality timber framed houses and period properties.
Deacon & Sandys offer a specialist architectural design service and are happy to work with other Architects, Designers and Main Contractors to achieve the same high standards.
Each piece of furniture we make is distinguished by our use of traditional methods of construction and by the quality of the craftsmanship. Mortice and tenon joints are fastened with wooden nails or pegs to ensure that all joints are secure with limited use of glue. Our extensive portfolio includes refectory tables with cup and cover legs, hand carved with gadroons and acanthus work and a comprehensive range of period style chairs, dressers, drawer chests, oak presses and four poster beds. Individual pieces of furniture and hand carving, perhaps to incorporate a family crest or motto, can be commissioned.
